With nephrostomy, showering is the limit of wetness. And my nephrostomy tubes block more frequently and I don't dare schedule the change more than 4 weeks and risking blockages at that. I've observed my care and taught myself to keep the tubes as free as possible.

How do you unblock the urostomy? I was hoping that wasn't possible to get blocked. I have had a nephrostomy tube procedure. It is a procedure to bypass the obstruction of urine from the kidney.

About a week and a half ago we noticed a very strong plastic-y smell (like a kiddie pool liner) from one of the bags. He reported this to the cancer center and no one seems to have ever come across this smell before. When I had my nephrostomy tube (twice), the other kidney produced in normal volume - about two to three cups per hour, depending on how much I drank. In other words, the kidneys EACH continued to produce at their previous rate.

My husband was put on nephrostomy tubes on both left and right side over 8 months ago. He will have to be on them for the remainder of his life.
