Classical conditioning is an unconscious or automatic learning process that involves creating an association between an unconditioned stimulus and a neutral stimulus to elicit a conditioned response. Classical conditioning is a learning process discovered by Ivan Pavlov in which one is taught to associate a specific stimulus with a given response. Classical conditioning, also referred to as Pavlovian, is a fundamental form of associative learning in which an organism learns to connect or associate two stimuli that repeatedly occur together.
Understanding the Context
Conditioning, in physiology, a behavioral process whereby a response becomes more frequent or more predictable in a given environment as a result of reinforcement, with reinforcement typically being a stimulus or reward for a desired response. Classical conditioning (also respondent conditioning and Pavlovian conditioning) is a behavioral procedure in which a biologically potent stimulus (e.g. food, a puff of air on the eye) is paired with a neutral stimulus (e.g. the sound of a musical triangle).

It’s the process in which behaviors are learned and modified based on associations with stimuli in the environment. There are two primary types of conditioning: classical conditioning and operant conditioning. We’ll explore these a little later. Conditioning in behavioral psychology is a theory that the reaction ("response") to an object or event ("stimulus") by a person or animal can be modified by 'learning', or conditioning. Operant conditioning involves voluntary, goal-directed behaviors—actions organisms emit intentionally to achieve outcomes.
