Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) refers to a condition when only one such mutation has occurred, and a cell with this mutation can expand to form a family of cells that circulate in the blood. Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) affects your blood stem cells. It increases your risk of blood cancer or heart disease.
Understanding the Context
People with CHIP also have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and of leukemia resulting from treatment for other cancers. CHIP is largely an age-related condition, occurring in 10 to 15 percent of people over age 65 and at least 30 percent of people by age 80. A condition caused by spontaneous genetic mutations in bone marrow cells, known as clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate significance (CHIP), is linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Interventional cardiologists at Northwestern Memorial Hospital have demonstrated outstanding clinical outcomes using an advanced catheter-based procedure called Complete Higher Risk Indicated Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) or CHIP to open blocked coronary arteries in the high-risk patient.

In this study, CHIP was a strong risk factor for myocarditis and pericarditis among middle-aged adults.
